The first Bloom Partnerships Terry Bane saw was as the Norwich in Bloom Association formed in 1986, Notcutts Garden Centre became joint local competition sponsors and had a advertising board on Pitt Street Roundabout.
Terry received a call from Chris Dunn (First Chairman of Norwich in Bloom) to invite to a meeting and be part of the group, both Terry and Chris at that time were employed by Norwich City Council, Terry was invited to bring his knowledge of horticulture and potential supply of hanging baskets and floral containers from EARLHAM PARK NURSERY to business who might like to get involved in the campaign, Terry also became a competition judge.
NOTCUTTS GARDEN CENTRES SUPPORT NORWICH IN BLOOM 1986 - PRESENT Notcutts Garden Centre continue to sponsor the local Friends of Norwich in Bloom environmental competitions and have sponsored and supported many events and opportunities since 1986, Notcutts Garden Centre have developed a close partnership with Blooms for Norwich and City College Norwich donating compost and seed trays for the Growing Communities Partnership Project, collecting Geraniums and Polyanthus grown by students to plant and maintain at a highway owned flower bed on the junction of Ipswich and Daniels Road.
NOTCUTTS GARDEN CENTRES BECOME NEW PATRON OF ANGLIA IN BLOOM 2019 In 2019 Notcutts Garden Centre proudly became Patron of Anglia in Bloom hosting a Spring Launch for 100 delegates in their restaurant at Norwich, planted a ceremonial tree and supported the regional campaign. |

WILLIAM "BILL" WEBSTER - CHAIR OF FRIENDS OF NORWICH IN BLOOM 1999 - 2006 Although I had been managing and generating sponsorship income for Norwich City Council as part of my Horticultural duties from the mid 1990's it was not until I met, got to know and listened to Bill that I realised their were opportunities to develop partnerships with business, organisations and voluntary groups and to bring each together would help enable a partnership of mutual benefit and help community well being, local landscapes and environmental enhancement.
In 2000 Bill and I developed a 5 year plan encouraging Friends of Norwich in Bloom members to support and be part, with my passion and photographic knowledge and support of my Norwich City Council Green Spaces manager I developed a set of display boards inviting and encouraging sponsorship on roundabouts and traffic islands as well as support for The Friends of Norwich in Bloom group, Bill and myself with other Friends of Norwich in Bloom attended many horticultural shows and events during the early millennium with the display boards attracting interest and support from new sponsors and partners for both the Norwich City Council Norwich in Bloom Scheme and The Friends of Norwich in Bloom.
ARCHANT, PRESS and MEDIA 2000 TO PRESENT Bill was always a good photographic subject and liked having his photo taken by me and the press, Bill was also good at speaking on the radio and TV, we were very fortunate that Archant and Radio Norfolk followed our events and activities over the years, I have provided hundreds of photos! Archant have kindly given me permission for articles to be used in my PowerPoint Presentation and on my website to help demonstrate how I have encouraged support and interest. |

TERRY BANE and NORWICH IN BLOOM/BLOOMS FOR NORWICH BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS 1999 - PRESENT In 2000 I collated, edited and created documents putting together my first City of Norwich - Bloom Portfolio showing horticultural and environmental civic and community projects, sponsorships, partnerships and resource management. I studied the campaign requirements documents and tried to evidence and demonstrate examples in each section of the core pillars, producing a portfolio was time consuming but I enjoyed the challenge, with a photographic set of display boards and a well prepared route I supported the Friends of Norwich in Bloom with their first entry into the regional Anglia in Bloom campaign - At the September awards ceremony in Stevenage Norwich Won Best City and Best Bloom Team.
CAROLYN DUNN NORWICH CITY CENTRE MANAGEMENT PARTNERSHIP (CCMP) 1999 - 2005 Bill Webster introduced me to Carolyn Dunn in 1999, Carolyn attended Friends of Norwich in Bloom meetings and events supporting the initiative and was keen to re-launch and promote the campaign, Carolyn encouraged Norwich business to support and sponsor Norwich in Bloom through the CCMP quarterly brochure and networks, CCMP also sponsored a flower bed outside Carolyn's office in Prince of Wales Road, seasonal bedding was used to create a floral CCMP logo.
In 2000 and 2002 I created two different A4, 3 fold leaflets using photos I had taken, CCMP sponsored the production, members of Friends of Norwich in Bloom used the leaflets to promote the campaign at all opportunities encouraging local competition entry, new members, sponsors and partners.
SUPPORTING BUSINESS PARTNERS and BUSINESS MEMBERS As the achievements and awareness of Norwich in Bloom became better known sponsorship and support increased, some business became partners contra dealing their specialist services, goods and hospitality to help develop, enhance and sustain the aims of the charity. In 2009/10 income and contra deals had exceeded the legal limit, as Friends of Norwich in Bloom Chairman I wrote, proposed and submitted documents to the Charity Commission a new constitution to become a registered charity, many supporting businesses became the first Trustees and paying BUSINESS MEMBERS.
SIGNAGE and PROMOTIONAL DISPLAYS - HUSSEY KNIGHTS 2003 and C.I.M. 2007 - PRESENT In 2003 Hussey Knights became partners supplying goods each year for promotional displays, in 2007 I met Mark Baker of C.I.M., it is through Mark's generous commitment and patience with me that Norwich has had so many sponsors. |

MEETING ROOMS, EVENTS and HOSPITALITY PARTNERSHIPS 1986 - PRESENT The first Norwich in Bloom meeting I attended was a introductory gathering at City Hall in 1985 followed by meetings at Elliot House, Ber Street then regular meetings at the beautiful Guildhall until 1990 when I changed duties, In 1999 I rejoined The Friends of Norwich in Bloom, meetings and some events were held at City Hall.
in 2001 meetings were moved to the Royal British Legion Club at Aylsham Road where Bill's son Martin Webster ran the premises, parking was free, Friends of Norwich in Bloom members and City College Norwich students helped develop the grounds for free rooms, the partnership ran until the British Legion closed in 2013.
In 2013, meetings were held at various premises, The Adam and Eve Public House, The Assembly House and INTU Chapelfield until 2014 as a partnership and sponsorship developed at Brook Hotel, Bowthorpe.
Best Western Brook Hotel as partners generously supported meeting rooms and some community events as a contra deal for advertising on planters at Norwich Train Station, supply of hanging baskets, bedding and sustainable plants, planting and maintenance by students from City College Norwich, students also gained work experience in the kitchen and restaurant.
In the last few years Friends of Norwich in Bloom have been regularly meeting at the beautiful floral award winning Adam and Eve Public House my favourite floral Pub in Norwich, Rita's flowers have been outstanding since I first photographed during Presentation Sunday in 2001 and Rita's hospitality and support as a Trustee so generous. |

JOHN ATTOE - CITY COLLEGE NORWICH PARTNERSHIP 1999 - PRESENT John Attoe and myself have been friends and professional horticulturalist since June 1977 when we met as I joined the staff at EARLHAM PARK NURSERY moving from Eaton Park, John had started in the nursery in 1996.
Both John and myself left the nursery in 1989 and 1990, I moved into Leisure and Community Services to the newly formed Grounds Maintenance Contracts Unit, we both kept in touch, in 1999 John became a tutor for City College Norwich at Norwich Training Workshop near Mile X Depot, John had some old wooden greenhouse.
In 1999 I met up with John formally asking if he and the students would like to take delivery of Canna's from the summer bedding displays in September to over winter and grow on as part of the students coursework and so we could use the plants again in June 2000 - this was the start of a 20 year partnership that has GROWN bigger and more successful each and every year, hopefully the photos and other web pages on my website will do justice and show the achievements and multiple partnerships Norwich in Bloom/Blooms for Norwich working closely with City College Norwich have enabled over the years - It has been a personal pleasure for me to have helped establish and sustain this partnership through my horticultural passion and friendship with John Attoe. |

CITY COLLEGE NORWICH PARTNERSHIPS and PLANT PRODUCTION Plant production increased as business and organisations requested plants from City College Norwich to enhance their premises and grounds, redundant glasshouses along Ipswich Road were refurbished and Polythene Tunnels at Hockering Nursery were used by City College Norwich students to grow more plants for the interest and demand.
All compost, plant paks, plug plants and horticultural sundries continue to be provided by Norwich City Council through sponsorship income generated through the Norwich in Bloom/Blooms for Norwich Scheme and Contra Deals.
In 2007 Barford Van Hire agreed a partnership through Terry Bane to supply and maintain a minibus for the students transport for additional promotion on a roundabout, the Barford minibus "Bloomobile's" have enabled students to visit and plant up many locations giving the opportunity for students to gain social interaction and potential job opportunities.
In 2007 Friend of Norwich in Blooms Harry Williamson had failing health, Bill Webster and Terry Bane asked City College Norwich if they would liaise with Harry to grow and plant up The Assembly House Pond Display, it was magnificent.
Each year City College Norwich grow around 25,000 plants, 9.000 Summer, 9,000 Autumn and 7,000 Perennials. |

GROWING COMMUNITIES PARTNERSHIPS and NETWORKS In 2018 through Norwich City Council's Enabling Team a pilot project called "Growing Communities Partnerships" was set up and successfully ran for one year, more community groups were invited to Get Involved in 2019.
THE INITIATIVE: Invite partner groups and volunteers with knowledge and facilities to sow seed at their own homes in seed and module plug trays and grow on seedlings until they are large enough to handle and ready to transport to City College Norwich for the plug plants to be potted and grown on to maturity by City College Norwich students.
Once the plants are fully grown partner groups can have up to one third of the plants they grew from seed plus a share of other plants grown by other partners and City College Norwich students.

HM PRISON SERVICES NORWICH 2003 - 2014 In 2003 Bill Webster and Carolyn Dunn visited HM Prison Services governor to look at redundant greenhouses and polythene tunnels to see if plants could be grown by inmates and staff for Norwich sheltered housing schemes.
In 2004 B&Q donated 40 bags of compost as RHS Britain in Bloom sponsors, Floranova donated seeds enabling Norwich Prison Services to grow 12,000 summer bedding plants that were delivered by Friends of Norwich in Bloom volunteers by cars over a 2 week period to over 40 sheltered housing schemes and 30 Norwich schools.
During the spring and summer of 2004 Norwich Prison Services were growing another 12,000 autumn bedding plants, delivering plants by cars was timely so Bill Webster and Terry Bane sought a sponsored van, a partnership began with Barford Van Hire that thrives and continues to help voluntary and Bloom Partnerships.
In 2005 Godfrey DIY Superstore donated compost and goods as part of a contra deal to advertise at Ketts Hill Roundabout helping to sustain and increase production of plants at Norwich Prison Services for the supply of plants through the Norwich in Bloom partnerships to sheltered housing, schools and other community projects.
The partnership sadly completed in 2014 due to key staff retiring who were not replaced at the peak of the partnership from 2011 - 2014 HM Prison Services and City College Norwich provided all Civic and Community plants, 58,000 summer bedding and 48,000 autumn bedding a total of 106,000 Bedding Plants each year. |

THE ASSEMBLY HOUSE PARTNERSHIP 1998 - PRESENT The Assembly House is a beautiful building in the heart of Norwich (Mancroft Ward) the Trust/Franchise became a partner with The Friends of Norwich in Bloom in 1998 through House Manager Michael King, Mike was very supportive and proudly became the 1st President of Friends of Norwich in Bloom in 2004 until 2017, retiring as President after helping Norwich achieve its first Gold Award as a national RHS Britain in Bloom Finalist in the Business Improvement District category.
Many Norwich in Bloom events and activities have been hosted and sponsored in the rooms at the Assembly House including two RHS Britain in Bloom seminar/launches in 2006 and 2012, the 2006 national seminar/launch was particularly memorably with lots of pomp and ceremony, a local schools Biodiversity colouring competition judged by Anglia TV's Clare Weller, Bill Webster was honored with a ride from City Hall in the Norwich Civic coach with The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Norwich Cllr. Michael Banham, the civic coach and accompanying Whifflers were welcome by many school children dressed in classroom made beneficial insects costumes, sponsors, supporters and Friends of Norwich in Bloom Team.
The Assembly House for many years was the meeting and starting place for regional Anglia in Bloom, national RHS Britain in Bloom judging and in 2009 and 2016 international Communities in Bloom judging, The Assembly House have done Norwich proud over the last 20 years providing beautifully presented buffets during judging days as part of the partnership.
Over the years as part of the partnership Norwich in Bloom has carried out seasonal plantings and supplied plants and floral containers through HM Prison Services Norwich, City College Norwich and Hockering Nursery, in 2002 The Assembly House Grounds was planted up with the first Norfolk and Norwich Crocosmia Heritage collection, the collection was relocated to Colman following refurbishments in 2015/16, City College Norwich continue to grow and provide bedding plants for containers and sustainable perennials. |

HARRY WILLIAMSON AT THE ASSEMBLY HOUSE 2005 - 2007 Harry Williamson loved growing plants, he grew many exotic plants including Tree Ferns at his sheltered housing garden at Bradecroft, after entering and winning with his garden and the whole sheltered housing scheme in the local Friends of Norwich in Bloom competition Harry joined The Friends of Norwich in Bloom Team in 2004 to share his passion.
Harry and Bill Webster became great friends and spent many hours together most days at Hockering Nursery, Royal British Legion and The Assembly House, Harry became very friendly with Ian Harris and used Ian's Poly Tunnels at Hockering to grow plants for many Bloom Partnerships and Community Projects.
Harry persuaded myself and Mike King to dig up the grass around the Pond Bed and make into a Exotic Display in 2005, but Harry will always be remembered for the 1,000 tuberous Begonia's kept warm in trays under his bed and later grown on at Hockering Nursery, Harry and Bill transported the Begonia's from Hockering Nursery where the Barford Van was kept before being planted out in the Pond Bed during perhaps the hottest week of 2006. The display was magnificent, Mike King calling his "floral delight" and won the Best Anglia in Bloom Pentland Plant Display.
Harry became ill during 2007, with Bill Webster and myself we encouraged John Attoe and City College Norwich students to take over planting and maintenance of the Pond Bed Display at Planters at The Assembly House whilst Ian Harris at Hockering Nursery continued to make up and supply Hanging Baskets as part of the Partnership and Friendships. |

ST. STEPHENS CHURCH VOLUNTEERS and CITY COLLEGE NORWICH PARTNERSHIP 2006 - PRESENT In 2003 St. Stephens Church approached the Chapelfield mall development requesting opening of a footpath to make a gate-way through the church grounds from Theatre Street to Chapelfield Plain.
In 2006 landscaping of the churchyard took place, new trees were planted near INTU Chapelfield, at this time, church member Vic Howe started a small flower bed outside the south door of the church, Vic knew Bill Webster from The Royal British Legion at Aylsham Road and asked Bill for bedding plants from HM Prison Services and later City College Norwich, Vic became very fond of the students and their efforts and left a donation to the project.
On the north side church members removed laurels and volunteer staff from Norwich Union (now Aviva) spent a day terracing the area and plant up a drought tolerant display, from these improvements St. Stephens church grounds developed further and became part of the Norwich in Bloom Partnership. The church grounds have been transformed in so many ways and are now inviting, colourful and biodiverse for around 50,000 people per week who walk along the footpath to and from INTU Chapelfield or sit in the church grounds to have their lunch.
The church has recently undergone building works that disrupted the grounds but has led to many improvements including wheelchair access and a new sitting area adjacent to Vic's Memorial Flower Bed and creation of a Cafe inside the church that I frequent with friends, colleagues and potential sponsors and partners to discuss business or have a chat over a pot of tea, soup or sandwich all managed and produced by volunteers. |

JO and REG CHIDDICK and ST. STEPHENS CHURCH VOLUNTEERS - SUSTAINED PARTNERSHIPS Both Jo and Reg Chiddick have been part of Friends of Norwich in Bloom like myself since it started in 1986, I first met them when I judged their garden in the late 1980's and visited with The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Norwich Councillor David Fuller and Friends of Norwich in Bloom Team in 1989 when they won Best Garden.
Jo and Reg also knew Vic Howe and helped Vic in the church grounds looking after Vic's Memorial Flower Bed after Vic sadly passed away in 2012, with many more volunteers and the continued Partnership with City College Norwich Vic's flower bed is well planted and maintained weekly.
In 2012 St. Stephens Church received a RHS Britain in Bloom Certificate of Distinction Award.
In 2015 Jo and Reg Chiddick were recognised as RHS Britain in Bloom Community Champions.
Over the last few years Jo, Reg and Church Volunteers have introduced a Edith Cavell Memorial Rose Bed, Amberol Barrel Planters and changed beds and borders to increase the range of diversity using sustainable plants providing flowers and interest through out the year and to attract more biodiversity into the grounds.
In 2016 and 17 St. Stephens Church volunteers supported the PURPLE4POLIO CROCUS campaign planting thousands of Crocus corms in the church grounds and organised a Afternoon Tea Party to raise awareness of the campaign.
Jo, Reg and myself regularly meet in the church cafe to plan plant production through City College Norwich before taking a tour of the church grounds to discuss development and future needs - We are all very proud of you Jo and Reg. |

COLMAN HOSPITAL and PRISCILLA BACON LODGE 2003 - PRESENT In 2003 Bill Webster contacted Peter Beales to ask for a donation of McMillan Nurse Roses to be planted at Priscilla Bacon Lodge by McMillan Nurses and the Sheriff of Norwich Bryan Gunn (Norwich City FC Goalkeeper)
Bulb planting is always a favourite with community volunteers, schools and organisations, in 2004 Norwich City Council donated 2,000 Crocus Remembrance (Breakthrough Breast Cancer) and 20,000 Snowdrop bulbs to Friends of Norwich in Bloom, the first a Crocus planting with the Sheriff of Norwich took place in November with Friends of Norwich in Bloom and some school pupils wearing Jo Chiddick's famous Pixie Hats, the next planting a week later Cubs, Beavers and Scouts planted the first 20,000 of a 60,000 Snowdrop Walk over 3 years.
On 23rd November 2004 my brother John and his daughter Sarah joined me and Friends of Norwich at Colman Hospital to plant snowdrops, with my camera Bill Webster took a photo of John, Sarah, myself with Sandra Paice and Kevin Rix which became our Mum's Favourite Photo sitting beside her bed until she passed away in 2017.
In 2005 Andy and Maureen Street donated a Hanging Basket Tree to Colman Hospital, the summer and autumn hanging baskets were made up and continue to be donated by Ian Harris, Hockering Nursery each year. In Autumn 2005 Guy Barker from Howards Nurseries, Wortham designed and help plant up a perennial display using plants David and Christine Howard donated, Howard Nurseries continue to support.
Each year City College Norwich supply Colman Hospital with summer and autumn bedding and sustainable perennials. From 2016 through Kathleen Rowlands, Friends of Norwich in Bloom relocated the Norfolk and Norwich Crocosmia Heritage Crocosmia collection from The Assembly House to Colman Hospital, with proposed building work the collection is to be moved to Norwich Heavenly Gardens church grounds as a trail. |
